Hi, I am your host, Pascale Gibon and I am delighted to welcome you to episode 308 of the Everyday Life Balance Show. 

Thank you for tuning in.

 

Our topic of job dissatisfaction continues.

 

Do you feel a sense of dread when your alarm goes off each morning, announcing it is time to get ready to go to work? 

Are you just going through the motions at a job that lacks purpose? 

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Sticking with an unfulfilling career can seriously impact your well-being and happiness, but it does not have to be this way. 

 

Today on the show, I will uncover the most common mistakes that keep people stuck in jobs that make them miserable. 

 

My goal is to help you recognize signs of work-life imbalance so that you can make changes and get on track with a career you find genuinely fulfilling.

 

Mistake #1 is ignoring those early red flags.

When work becomes demotivating, it is easy to assume the dissatisfaction will quickly disappear. But feelings of boredom, lack of enjoyment, absenteeism, leaving early, and wanting to be elsewhere will not resolve themselves. As someone who has been there, I can tell you those feelings only grow over time, making each workday more painful. Do not ignore the signs because they mean something needs to change.

 

Another big mistake, mistake #2, is failing to seek guidance. 

Before going to HR, consider getting support from a career coach or trusted mentor. They can help you identify steps to improve your current role or expand your opportunities. The most important thing is not to isolate yourself when you are unhappy at work.

 

Rushing into impulsive decisions without proper planning is also common. This is mistake #3.

If you are considering a new opportunity, it is essential to research the company's values and culture to ensure they align with yours. The type of industry matters too - think about how your personality would fit with the environment you choose to work in. Start envisioning the type of company you want to work for that would be a perfect match. Do not make the mistake of skipping this step!

 

What about neglecting financial planning? That is mistake #4.

Not considering the financial implications of a career change can lead to financial stress and instability. Financial planning as a backup is necessary if, for example, you decide to quit your current job and do not get a new one straight away.

 

Ignoring your emotional well-being is mistake #5.  

Neglecting to address the emotional toll of a job you dislike can lead to burnout, anxiety, and other mental health issues. 

If this is you, take a step back to consider your options to restore balance and harmony in your life. There is a need for change to enhance your overall well-being. This leads me to,

 

Mistake #6 is fearing change.

Risk aversion and resistance to change can keep you stuck in an unfulfilling career. An important question is how being stuck in an unhappy job affects your well-being and family life.

 

I could go on, but you get the idea. 

If you are dissatisfied with your work, I have a challenge for you this week.

  • Take just 15 minutes to write down your skills, interests, and values. This self-assessment lays the groundwork for change. 

 Stop procrastinating on your happiness and start making the circumstances you want to find fulfilment in your career.

 

As the poet Rumi said, "Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love." 

 

Remember, now is your time to transform your life one step at a time. Do not settle for less than a fulfilling career.
